What was the old butler hotel like?
The Butler was first founded in 1892. It originally served as a grist mill for Saugatuck, but the price of coal skyrocketed and they had to close it within just a few years. Then by 1901, the mill had been converted into a hotel with a restaurant. Therefore, the Hotel Butler was given its name.
At around 1960, the hotel portion of the building was closed because it wasn’t up to fire safety requirements. Although the upper portion of the building was shut down, the owners kept the restaurant running. In 1973, the upper floors were removed and the building was remodeled as it still looks today.
